German kitchens have become increasingly popular over the last few years.
In part, this is because the modern kitchen has become a key focal point of the home.
It’s no longer just a place we prepare food.
It’s the place we gather as a family, socialise with friends, eat together and drink together.
The modern kitchen has essentially taken over the role of the living room as the key place we hang out at home.
Which means it can no longer just be a functional room.
It has to be designed to the same innovative, sleek standards as the rest of the house.
When you think of German engineering, you automatically think Audi, Mercedes Banz, and BMW.
These are high spec machines built for function, with the quality, simplistic design to match.
And these standards of engineering and manufacturing have translated into the creation of German kitchens.
Particularly Schüller kitchens which, with their tradition of a family owned business combined with commitment to precise kitchen engineering, makes them a stand out as a supplier for German kitchens.
In this article we’ll go through the top reasons why German kitchens have become so popular.
German kitchens are built to last
German engineering has a well established reputation for building quality products that stand the test of time.
It’s a reputation well earned.
And the manufacturing of German kitchens carries the same reputation.
With units manufactured and assembled to precise detail, you can be assured that every bit of kitchen equipment has been quality checked before it gets close to being installed.
From the material, to the structure, to the finish, every part of a German kitchen is built to be robust and high quality.
You know you’re getting the stamp of approval from German manufacturing when you opt for a Schüller or German kitchen.
German kitchens are innovative in design
No matter the size or style of your kitchen, you want to make the best use of the space.
Not only do you need to create a natural flow for using the kitchen.
You need to create enough space for the social aspect of your modern kitchen.
While much of what you can achieve will depend on the size of your space, German kitchens are renowned for their innovation designs.
From countertop accessories that make your kitchen more functional, to making best use of storage in a small space to remove clutter, and creating social areas to meet the modern needs of your kitchen, German designs can help you create the ideal space.
German kitchens are highly customisable
While German engineering might be better known for function over form, when it comes to customising your kitchen space, they have both areas covered.
These aren’t flat pack designs.
Each German kitchen is designed and modelled around your specific needs.
And as no two people use their kitchen in exactly the same way, you can customise how your area functions and feels to the highest degree.
Whether you want a more futuristic, ergonomic design to something a little more traditional, there is a German kitchen design that fits your needs.
Buying a new kitchen is an investment, so you want to make sure you’re creating a space that is functional, comfortable and customised to your specific requirements.
German engineering seal of approval
German engineering is known around the world for its precision, efficient engineering.
And this is a tradition translated into the design of its kitchens.
Not just in terms of the main units, but the auxiliary equipment and electrical components.
Everything about the German kitchen design follows the same precision and attention to detail as other German engineering.
From robust, built to last surfaces to high finished units you’ll be able to find something that meets your style and personality.
Quality, but affordable
German kitchens come with the manufacturing and engineering precision you’d expect from something German made, but they don’t come with the price tag.
In fact, they’re much more affordable than you might think based on the quality you’re getting.
Much of the price will be determined by the size and style of your kitchen.
But whatever it is you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find a fully functional, precision designed German or Schüller kitchen that meets your needs.

Cooking up a positive future with outdoor kitchen spaces
Outdoor kitchens are a great lifestyle choice. The stand-alone barbeque has made way for tailored outdoor kitchen spaces. We love Italian brand Steel Cucine for great ideas for outdoor kitchens that come complete with modular grills, cabinets, sinks and wine coolers. If you don’t have space for a fully fitted kitchen, worry not. Because this is a brand that has pro-level grills for everyone.
We all feel better when we are outdoors, and we certainly feel more upbeat when we spend time with friends or family. With the sunniest spring on record and a blistering summer on the horizon, it’s outdoor spaces that will become the setting for some of the biggest transformation plans. While we often talk of investment in property, this time the focus is on investing in ourselves. The way to do this is to create an environment that makes us feel positive about the future.
We’re feeling good
We’ve all taken a bit of a battering in the last few weeks. And with life slowly returning back to normal, many of us will be planning a trip to the local garden centre. Flowers, firepits, painted fences and new furniture are filling up trolleys this summer. Growing vegetables has become one of the latest hobbies and we’re pretty confident that the garden pond is fast becoming a trend. The reality is, that many of us have stepped back to realise the benefit of sometimes, simply being still.
While the idea of getting out and socialising is appealing, we’re all acutely reminded of the importance of creating a home that we enjoy being in, with spaces that bring pleasure and a feeling of safety. Restrictions may be lifting, but our focus has shifted for good. The benefit of outdoor living space has been highlighted in a way that none of us could have predicted. The pleasure of socialising at home, with people that we are close to, will become increasingly important. From bringing the nation in, let’s start taking the indoors out.
Family and friends re-united
We’ve all missed friends and family. With summer months made for leisurely lunches and evening BBQs, the outdoor kitchen is the ultimate garden must-have. Whether a BBQ newbie, or an old hand at hosting outdoor get togethers – it makes sense to have an outdoor space dedicated to cooking up a feast. Who doesn’t love the outside cooking spaces on our European summer holidays?
Everything, and sometimes the kitchen sink
A tailored outdoor kitchen may be something that space won’t allow. So the solution could be a smaller countertop grill, neatly stored after use. Remember, the art of the top-notch experience is making sure that you never compromise on quality, particularly when you have to compromise on size. If you want to cook like a pro, then equip yourselves with professional standard equipment. You can’t make a great coffee without a great espresso machine. So don’t expect to grill great steaks with anything less than a great barbeque.
Even the humble summer house is experiencing a new lease of life, with rattan chairs and coffee table making way for contemporary cousins with fully fitted kitchens. Simply throw open the doors to make the best of the sunshine. For those that prioritise larger scale or regular socialising at home, it’s hard to ignore the benefits of an additional working kitchen. The comfort of the indoor family space and the practicality of the additional garden kitchen provides the very best of both worlds.
An undercover affair
Remember – the only thing that has ever kinked the armour of the barbeque is the weather, and it’s as much an issue in the warmer climates of southern Europe where eating outdoors is a way of life. It’s a simple fix, just include a canopy in the design. Adding protection from direct sunlight, unexpected showers and warmer months, also means that you can include innovative outdoor lighting. Even, perhaps, a garden heater to extend the evening’s enjoyment.
If you are creating a permanent area, you likely have a style in mind. So when you are looking at tables and chairs, allow for adequate space to move around. A bar area is a good idea if you don’t have the space for a separate table area. Just make sure you allow for ample food storage and sufficient food prep area. And don’t forget space for pots, pans and glasses. Although the requirements of an outdoor kitchen are less, these things that can improve the enjoyment of a space.
Let’s make the most of our gardens, time with family and meals with friends. At InHouse, we always say that the heart of the home is in the kitchen. We all love eating together, so let’s take our kitchens outside, and create happy memories for years to come.

Schüller 2019: Solid growth today, focus on tomorrow
1. Market review
With a sales increase of around 3% in 2019, the German kitchen furniture industry looks back on a successful result. According to the VdDK, this increase is due in particular to significant growth in exports. In comparison with other sectors, the German kitchen furniture industry is characterised by stable sales and annual growth. The aspects of “performance”, “product quality”, “price behaviour” and the “Made in Germany” seal of approval form the basis of the industry’s success.
True to the motto “always one step ahead”, the Schüller Möbelwerk KG was able to continue the positive development of the previous year in 2019.
With a turnover of 554 million euros – i.e. an increase of 9.9 % compared to 2018 – the company developed positively in the past year. Desired, disproportionate growth and thrust came from exports with a plus of around 16.3 %. With a quota of 25.8 %, the performance in the foreign markets was thus increased to 143 million euros. In 2018, this figure amounted to 123 million euros.
Most of the sales were generated within Europe. In its German home market, the Schüller Möbelwerk KG generated a turnover of 411 million euros, which corresponds to an increase of 8.0 %. It is gratifying that the premium segment including the next125 brand has continued to gain in importance.
3. Investment activities
“Typically Schüller”, the year 2019 was characterised by intensive investment activities: last year, an amount of around 40.6 million euros was invested in buildings, machines & facilities, IT & networks as well as logistics & truck fleet. This total also includes advance payments.
In addition to the investments mentioned, the expansion of the Schüller-Küchen production at the location in Herrieden was initiated. The implementation of the necessary infrastructural measures has been started in spring 2019 followed by the construction of an employee car park with a maximum capacity of 1,870 parking spaces. The completion of this project is scheduled for mid-2020. At the turn of the year 2019/2020, the foundations for the new pro- duction halls were laid; the launch of the mechanical facilities is planned for late autumn 2021.
4. Employee development
Last year, the number of people employed by the Schüller Möbelwerk KG rose to 1,838 which corresponds to an increase of 11 % compared to the previous year. The increased gain in employees – a preparatory measure for the production launch in the new halls – is already clearly noticeable today.
The field of training, a key factor of growth for the Franconian family-run company in times of a shortage of skilled workers, picked up speed in 2019: 118 trainees are currently employed at the Herrieden site.
With the extensive Schüller-programme of benefits, the Schüller Möbelwerk KG meets the requirements of a modern company. Attractive additional services, such as social security and health care, create sustainable employee loyalty and satisfaction. The bike leasing topic has been particularly well received, since it does not only score well in terms of health, but also means a commitment to the environment.
5. Product changes
In the past, the kitchen has increasingly developed into the central hub of the house: it is the place for food preparation and -consumption, the centre of communication and life.
In order to meet individual demands, the collection year 2020 brought out a number of innovations:
The innovative OPTIMUS drawer-/pull-out system, as the successor to the existing Tandem system, was developed in cooperation with the leading Austrian fitting manufacturer Blum. Based on decades of shared experience, Schüller created a new drawer-/pull-out generation that is perfectly matched to the schüller.C collection while combining high design standards with optimum functionality.
The new carcase height C5 (84.5 cm) represents a contemporary symbiosis of functionality and aesthetics: the carcase raised by half a grid, not only offers more storage space and ergo-nomics, but also contributes significantly to a more homelike look.
In terms of scarce and expensive living space, utmost priority is given to the best possible use of the available storage space. However, niche-panel systems, built-in table extractors and front-wall installations do also call for extra deep solutions. For this reason, the company has revalued and -designed the range of attractive 66 cm deep cabinets.
In the field of complete marketing, Schüller offers a strong range of NEFF appliances in the collection year 2020, from ovens and hobs to refrigerators and dishwashers, up to extractor hoods and compact devices completing the existing assortment with a further alternative in the premium segment.
The innovations of 2020 are rounded off by intelligent storage and waste solutions, which significantly increase the range of planning options.
In 2019, the company set the bar high in terms of dealer services. The innovations – whether changes in the planning system, automated changes between the different construction heights or the possibility to plan utility rooms – are a significant relief in daily business, promoting the planning competence of the dealer. The “Order Change” option, which offers the possibility of handling changes to the order fully electronically, ensures a convenient ordering process.
Last year, the focus with regard to the next125 premium brand was set on innovations in terms of communication and services.
As a logical addition to the extensive digital measures of the past year – relaunch of the web- site and presence in social media – a cooperation with Kitchen Stories promises a positive, emotional brand building and storytelling in the digital premium environment: from now on, next125 kitchens are an integral part of the recipe videos of the internationally successful digital cooking platform and also in the focus campaign “To Market We Go” by Kitchen Stories – produced in different European countries – with a cross-media presence.
Last year, three new design awards confirmed the success of the design concept: the ICONIC AWARD honoured the panel garden, a hanging home for herbs. The IF Design Award, on the other hand, appreciated the Flex-Boxes made of non-woven fabric, the German Brand Award rewarded the next125 brand in its entirety.
The next125 premium brand is currently looking forward to the premiere of the innovations 2020 at the EuroCucina in Milan: in 2018, the company announced a presentation of novelties every two years on the occasion of the the Milan fair. From 21st to 26th April, visitors from home and abroad can equally expect the premiere of the new “animal” campaign motif which continues the extraordinary visual concept of an elegant minimalist kitchen, an outstanding location and a domestic livestock breed.
6. Outlook 2020
The positive development of the financial year 2019 and the numerous innovations in the field of products and services prove the motto “Setting standards, taking advantage of the innovative lead”. The forecasts for 2020 are also positive: despite geopolitical uncertainties, the regional markets are stable. In addition, the current interest rate level, the agile construction industry and the urge for property and mobility of the population further contribute to constant demand.

Interior trends come and go but the influence of the Bauhaus movement remains unabated, despite being 2019 being the centenary of arguably, the most influential design movement in European history. And the reason for success? It’s more than style that drives design.
The what, when, why’s and how to take the best of Bauhaus and apply it to modern day kitchen design.
100 years of design – Why Bauhaus still rocks in the latest kitchens, by next125
“Bauhaus focused on form and function, dispensing with superfluous decoration, embracing the capacity of manufacturing and creating beautiful designs with purpose. And here we are 100 years on, with the most contemporary interiors still witness to a design principle as relevant today, as it was back then. And when it comes to kitchen design – we simply cannot get enough of it” say’s Wayne Dance, Managing Director at InHouse, for German brand next125.
“It’s clear to see the influence of the Bauhaus movement is still driving design, and it’s easy to understand why. Bauhaus had principles, focussing on form and function, dispensing with superfluous decoration, embracing the capacity of manufacturing and creating beautiful designs with purpose. The only thing that has really changed, is manufacturing. With today’s impressive technology, it’s easier than ever before to create a contemporary Bauhaus utopia – mass produced designs as close to individually crafted, as it is possible to be”.
HOW to use the Bauhaus principle at home
- Remember that this is more than just a style; it’s a way of thinking. Think function, think purpose, think quality. Off the shelf is not the very best a product can be and spending £80k is not applying the principle of value
- The Bauhaus style focuses on geometric shape, so opt for a grid system for planning. No matter the planning complexity or cabinet shapes and sizes, the final design will be visually consistent and appear effortless.
- Think about purpose: Bauhaus puts the detail in form and function, so just creating a contemporary look isn’t going to cut the mustard when it comes to functionality. Fortunately, modern day Bauhaus is actually pretty easy to achieve. Think about how you use your space, what you need, nothing more, and nothing less.
- Linear and cubist design doesn’t mean replicated an unforgiving space. Unite and divide open plan spaces with variable height plinths and cabinets, wall hung design and beautiful furniture style island units. Opting for the grid system allows for variable height plinths and cabinet
- Functionality is critical and it applies to everyone that uses a space for cooking, socialising or work. So go modular, it’s the fast track route to merging function, form and aesthetics.
Bauhaus design loves simple geometry, with shape creating minimal and fluid design that is as contemporary today as it was 100 years ago. The modular NX 912, with simple lines, beautiful ceramic surface and functionality that is second to none, the next125 collection is embodies the very best of Bauhaus style design.
Rooted in Bauhaus history, every next125 kitchen unites seven design principles: to be precise, elegant, creative, minimal, functional, emotional and technological. With an open shelf unit that creates architectural definition and purpose, this NX 620 is the perfect example. Ceramic panels and worktops partner with natural walnut and Fenix laminate material. The linear next125 pendant draws the eye to clean line fronts that conceal Tip-On mechanisms and perfectly tailored storage.
The 125mm grid, geometric feature and minimalist purity are the hallmark of the NX 500. Free from grip ledge or recessed handles, flat fronts allow the eye to focus on a uniform joint pattern. Applying the Bauhaus principle that functionality, aesthetics and affordability are of equal importance.
Ticking all the right boxes for the application of Bauhaus, the furniture style Island unit from the next125 collection has style, function and simplicity down to an art form. The NX800 table style unit discretely houses pipework and electrics, whilst the recessed plinth gives the appearance of a completely freestanding piece of furniture.
At the EuroCucina, the premium brand celebrates the premiere of the new collection: a holistic brand experience of product, design and marketing.
17. until 22. April 2018
From southern Germany out into the world: next125 excited showgoers with its superlative exhibition stand at this year’s EuroCucina during Salone del Mobile in Milan. At the same time, next125 proved to be a smash hit among the international audience with its standard of design and product innovations. Well attended at all times and speaking to the emotions, the exhibition stand perfectly visualised the brand values of next125 – “Design in harmony with nature and price”. Elegant, dark, with indirect accent lighting, open and closed areas as well as interesting and exciting vistas, the stand provided the stage for displaying six kitchens configured with innovations from next125 for every aspect of the kitchen as a space to live in. The animal protagonists from the new brand campaign were a magnet among stand visitors and, besides the business side of things, gave a sense of cheer to the exhibition and brought it to life in a way that will be remembered.
Our single line front look enables an elegant appearance thanks to reduced lines. The result is a front image that can be seen as a further development of an even clearer design style, more consistent lines and a more objective reduction. This option is limited to just one horizontal grip ledge profile below the worktop that is used for opening the first drawer or pull-out. The drawers/pull-outs below them are opened by means of the mechanical drawer/ pull-out opening system TIP-ON. The result is a reduced front appearance with aesthetic appeal. At the same time, nothing stands in the way of using worktops in the thickness of 1.2 cm to 4 cm
How do you create a stylish connection between kitchen, dining room and living room? Our answer: the multifunctional next125 sideboards. Thanks to their clean design, they appear almost to float, and at the same time, the constructive substructure underlines the cubic architecture. Clear, pure, aesthetic and yet featuring many loving details. For example the lowered tray as a tableau, the push-in shelf or the open shelf base unit with pull-outs. Of course, our sideboards are also available with a fully closed front – offered in 3 heights and 4 widths. A choice of satin lacquer, matt velvet lacquer, laminate Fenix and veneer finishes are available.
Frame Rack aluminium open shelf unit system
Fine lines and exciting industrial-style structures give the FRAME RACK its consciously minimalist radiance. In addition, the universal application potential: whether wall mounted, floor standing, integrated into the island or suspended from the ceiling shelf solution. The sophisticated FRAME RACK system made of aluminium always shows itself in its functional and at the same time attractive form. Perfectly designed for individual kitchen planning, the FRAME RACK is available in the profile versions aluminium stainless steel coloured and Aluminium onyx black.
LED pendant light
Illuminates, but as a light, it is practically invisible. Like a line in the landscape – the light floats above the dining table or cooking area so delicately, and yet is a perfect illuminator. Equipped with a 4-channel remote control, the light colour temperature can be controlled with precision. Available in two versions: stainless steel coloured and onyx black. Thanks to its continuous height adjustment technology, the light can be used anywhere. Thanks to the LED equipment, it is energy-saving and is in the energy efficiency class A+.
Onyx black cubes
Our Cube system mounted on the wall, specially developed for next125, is a real niche product. It makes work in the kitchen so much easier. Everything is instantly on hand. Black on black is the new subject. Avoiding hard contrasts and creating harmonious combinations. In order to fulfil this zeitgeist, the profiles and cubes of the recess panel system are now also available in aluminium onyx black in addition to the aluminium stainless steel version. In particular, the onyx black tone-in-tone combination provides a modern look with a practically invisible appearance. An advantage of our Cube system, whether light or dark, is the quick access to all kitchen aids. Whether kitchen roll, knife block, spices or cooking spoons – everything is instantly on hand.
Panel garden with integrated lighting
What can be better than using fresh herbs to cook with? We have developed a solution just for this: The panel garden with integrated lighting helps herbs to remain fresh for longer – this makes particular sense in darker parts of the kitchen. The lighting is controlled by a timer that leaves the light on for 14 hours and then switches it off for 10 hours. Thus, you always have fresh herbs to hand and do not need to visit the market as often. The panel garden is also available without illumination, in the event that the herbs receive sufficient daylight.
A new idea for our drawers and pull-outs: our Flex-Boxes made from moulded nonwoven material. The soft non-woven material has a pleasant feel and softens the noises made by cutlery, kitchen utensils or China. There are 7 moulded nonwoven inserts that can be combined in any way to form an interior: cutlery insert, cooking utensil insert, knife block insert, small nonwoven box, large nonwoven box, lid for large nonwoven box, plate rack and additional anti-slip mats. The Flex-Boxes in oak can be combined ideally with the Flex-Boxes made from moulded nonwoven material as both types are coordinated in size. The Flex-Boxes made from moulded nonwoven material can be cleaned by vacuuming them, wiping them (with a damp cloth) or, if heavily soiled, by washing them in the dishwasher on an Eco 45 °C cycle.

Courage for colour pays off: The Schüller exhibition stand received the ICONIC AWARD
On the occasion of the LivingKitchen, the international kitchen event at the imm cologne in January 2017, the Franconian kitchen manufacturer fully concentrated on the topic of colour. A decision which has obviously paid off as proven by the receipt of the ICONIC AWARD 2017 for the exhibition stand.
Schüller convinced the jury with an innovative stand design setting the Colour Concept into the focus of interest. Visitors were welcomed by a fascinating world of colours true to the motto “experience kitchens I design the future”. The company once again demonstrated an outstanding competence regarding the processing of environmentally friendly lacquers.
On more than 500 square metres of exhibition space, in differently varnished wooden cubes of maritime pine, Schüller presented elaborate concepts concerning the kitchen of tomorrow − adapted to different target groups. The main focus was put on the presentation of realistic kitchen solutions designed for “real life”.
The exhibition was rounded off by different competence areas. A kitchen configurator integrated on the stand called in order to test the effects of various colour tones. One separate exhibition area each was dedicated to the exclusive appliance brand of JUNO as well as to the ceramic and quartz stone collection of Systemo. As a highlight, the new corporate film having been especially produced for the LivingKitchen, inspired the visitors.
“Not only our next125 premium collection had already received several prestigious design awards, but also the fact that the exhibition stand concept received the ICONIC AWARD, once again demonstrates the high design competence of Schüller,” concludes the executive board of the Schüller Möbelwerk KG.
Integrally networked − The ICONIC AWARD initiated by the internationally renowned Council for Design awards visionary architecture, innovative products and sustainable communication from all branches of the architecture, the construction and real estate industry as well as the manufacturing industry in five main categories. Thus, competition concentrates on the elementary importance of interaction between individual trades. The focus is set on integrated and consistent staging of architectural products. An independent and expert jury decides on granting the ICONIC AWARD.
